Accounting Manager
American Public Education, Inc.
This position is responsible for managing a team of accountants while also serving in a leadership role. The ability to perform detailed reviews and analyze results and processes at a strategic level are critical to success. Responsibilities focus on monthly close, distribution of various financial reports, reconciliations, expense and account analyses, various tax related filings, and audits.
Responsibilities:
- Train, supervise, support, and develop direct reports. Ensure functions and responsibilities of the team are performed timely and reviewed for accuracy.
- Management of the monthly close process, including preparation and review of monthly closing journal entries, maintenance of close checklists, oversight of close deadlines, and preparation and distribution of accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reporting.
- Prepare and review monthly reconciliations and analysis of certain accounts.
- Prepare and review various information requests and liaise with external tax consultants to complete tax filings. This includes sales & use tax filings, annual franchise tax reporting, and responses to various tax authorities.
- Answers accounting and financial questions by researching and interpreting data.
- Provides management with monthly and quarterly analytics and variance analysis.
- Identifies opportunities for process improvement and presents recommendations for implementation.
- Participates in audits to include Sarbanes-Oxley, quarterly reviews and annual audits conducted by internal and external auditors.
- Updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities, reading professional publications, and participating in professional organizations.
- Protects organization’s value by keeping information confidential.
- Interacts with other teams to achieve daily goals.
- Stays abreast of all policies & procedures as well as industry changes, best practices, and technology.
- Special projects as assigned.
- Performs other duties as assigned
Essential Skills:
- Knowledge and understanding of the application of the rules of GAAP and SOX requirements.

Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting or a related field is required.
- Corporate accounting / General ledger experience is required.
- Public company experience is preferred.
- Experience with Great Plains and Management Reporter or similar accounting software is preferred.
- Proficient with windows-based applications to include Microsoft Office with intermediate to expert Excel skills.
